'That dark wood was cut down, and now forest trees on 3 sides of us (15 years old). I think spruce and larch and just as nice when larch sheds its leaves, they turn a beautiful russet brown, the lovely firs and spruce are all intermingled with the larch. This was Marscalloch 30 years ago before the dam filled up the valley. No hayshed now, I hear it was burned down. Hydro electric board made this dam, and it's a never-ending joy to me. I love watching the ducks etc on water.' -

Carsphairn Church
The present church was built in 1815 on the site where there had been a church since 1636. Inside are several interesting plaques and one of the four remaining central communion tables in Scotland. In the churchyard are to be found some notable gravestones. At the north east end there used to be an outside staircase to the miner's gallery, now demolished.Tags Church of Scotland -

Found in Photo_376 (album). To: Miss J B MacMillan, Carsphairn, Kirkcudbrightshire. Athol Palace Hotel, Pitlochry 24-7-23. This is a bridge over the “Tummel”. We were over it yesterday. The supports at each end are tipped with gold and it looks pretty when the sun is shining. There has been a lot of rain but nearly always at night so we have got very little of it. We go home on Friday. Kind regards to all M. Brown -

Transcript 'B/P 6/5/1965 Thanks for card just received. It's pouring rain at present and very cold. Yesterday was lovely and I had a turn round the churchyard where the daffodils are a picture now. Mrs Belford is celebrating her 92nd birthday today. She has heaps of cards, flowers, sweets, eggs and fruit. Wonderful old lady. The Guild go to Eastwoodhill on Monday for our annual visit to the old folks. Hope I feel more like it than I do today -not feeling too good. My love to you both, and all at Shiel Rig. Kate. -

Schoolhouse / Shooting Lodge at Woodhead Mine
Taken in 1886 this sepia photo shows the schoolhouse turned into a shooting lodge after the closure of the leadmine at Woodhead in 1873. It was built as the school in 1843 for the children of the miners. All that remains of the building now is the facade. See Heritage Trail no 3.
