Clog and Shoe Making

Today only factories and a few individual clog makers produce clogs. In the past most villages supported clog and shoe makers. In Carsphairn we know that there was a cobbler Robert Brown, still working after the 1st World War at the southern edge of the village.

John Hutchinson in Dalry was probaby the last shoe and clogmaker in the old tradition. Before his death in 1979 he passed his knowledge, skill and tools on to Godfrey Smith who continued the craft at Balmaclellan.

There is also photographic evidence of Robert Brown's son John working in the northernmost of the two cottages - one now called Glenrosa. Further research is required to establish when the last shoemaker and or clogmaker ceased trading in Carsphairn.
